I’ve never been a big fan of Lana Del Rey for her music or her personality. The whole “trailer-trash-esque” persona when it’s known she came from money, her ultra-moody and melodramatic tunes…none of it. I can remember my senior year of university everybody and their brother was getting obsessed with her and my only response was a scoffing “ugh” I mean, she has ace fashion sense, but that’s still not enough for me. But I let most of that slide and knew it was mainly my personal preferences to dislike her. Until now.
Let me take you on the journey of Lana Del Rey and “WHAT THE FUCK DID SHE JUST SAY???!?”
The majority of artists would be scathing mad if they ever got accused of sleeping their way to the top. It’s like the ultimate diss for anybody famous. That they didn’t earn their spot by talent, but by more devious measures. In an interview with Complex Lana was quoted saying, “You know, I have slept with a lot of guys in the industry, but none of them helped me get my record deals.” Okay well that’s a good start I was almost going to give her props until she finished her rant with the statement of, “Which is annoying.” Uhm…say what? Yes, Lana finds it annoying that she couldn’t sleep her way to the top. She would like her music to be cheapened by sleeping her way to the top 40. It’s also a statement that’s hella degrading to women because we are often the ones accused of using our sexualities and bodies to charm and tempt our way to fame.
But no that hasn’t been it! Lana couldn’t stop there. She also had a Twitter feud with Kurt Cobain’s progeny Frances Bean (ya know the daughter he left behind when he died and she was only a young child) on how Lana wishes she were dead already because her idols all died young. In an interview with The Guardian she stated it made artists memorable and interesting by kicking the bucket early. For multiple paragraphs she lamented the idea of how “I don’t want to do this anymore, but I am.” Which is morbid enough itself, but you would figure being called out about romanticizing early death by someone affected by one she’d do the right thing and apologize wouldn’t you? Well, Lana doesn’t have that empathy switch I guess. Instead she tried to attack the journalist of the article and ruin their career by calling them a hack, that they only used leading questions meant to get her in trouble, and did the ultimate misdeed in journalism of misquoting her completely. Well unfortunately for that plan the journalist released the full audio tapes of the interview and well everything Lana was saying was 100% false putting her into bad light not once, but twice. Ouch. Looking back an apology seemed easier didn’t it?
I wish that was the end of it, but sadly the Lana Del Rey stupidity train just kept barreling on during promo of her new album. Next up? Feminism. I get the concept of feminism seems to be unflailingly hard to comprehend and accept to most young people nowadays, but gasp it’s still important. In another interview with Fader, Lana noted “For me, the issue of feminism is just not an interesting concept. Whenever people bring up feminism, I’m like, god. I’m just not really that interested.” Oh cool. It sounds like to Lana feminism is just about as exciting as watching mold grow. Did you know if it wasn’t for feminism you probably wouldn’t be a singer today? Or that women still severely fall behind men in every aspect of life? I guess feminism isn’t important to you though when you’d rather sleep your way to fame. She tried to bounce back from the statement and clarify “My idea of a true feminist is a woman who feels free enough to do whatever she wants.” Well… nice try but I didn’t know classifying feminism as boring made you a true feminist who boldly does what she wants, including bashing the thing that makes you a true feminist. Do you get that logic? Cause I sure as hell don’t.
This post seems densely long doesn’t it? Yet, it’s still not over. There’s at least one more pitfall Lana has created for herself recently. While all the others could be blamed on stupidity this next one just baffles me. She doesn’t want fans to listen to her music. Oh yeah you read that right too. Lana thinks fans will ruin her music by listening to it. It yet another interview (maybe you should avoid those dear?) with Rolling Stone Lana said,
“I just don’t want them to hear it at all. I’m very selfish. I make everything for me, kind of. I mean, every little thing, down to the guitar and the drums. It’s just for me… I don’t want them to hear it and think about it. It’s none of their business!”
I’ll give her a miniscule break on this. I get to a musician their work is practically an extension of the deepest parts of their soul or almost a child they nurtured to fruition. It’s personal. But the whole point of making music for famous artists is to share it with others. If you really don’t want to have other people enjoy it and use it, maybe you shouldn’t of signed a multi-million dollar record deal with a major company. That’s what thousands of people out there dream of every day. People who would kill to have others listen to and love their music!
Are all of these supposed to be shock inducing statements to get people talking about you Lana? Well, that may be working, but not in the way you were hoping. It’s turned you into a joke. I may have never liked Lana much, but I have had plenty of friends who were actually excited for her newest album yet statement after statement has made them turn up their noses and lose all interest.
So here’s my advice to Ms. Del Rey after all these recent incidents. Please stop. Just shut up and fade away if it’s all so miserable to you. Or at least just stop talking out of your ass so people can try and enjoy your music. You’re lucky you got another shot at this whole music career after your massive SNL debacle of 2012, so maybe you should make the most of it.
Until next time,
