If you don’t follow me on Twitter (which why not?) you often will find me commenting on pop culture happenings. Last Sunday while I was watching Shameless I made an offhand comment about one of the show’s ongoing couples – Fiona and Jimmy Steve. Somehow out of the thousands of tweets that occur during the sixty minutes the show is on, the official Twitter decided to comment on mine. After it got retweeted my notifications went crazy! The question I got asked repeatedly was if Fiona and Jimmy Steve were one of my favorite fictional couples. Which, the answer is no. So of course, people were curious who exactly it could be.
When I was growing up I found myself constantly having strong opinions on the relationships of characters in television shows and movies. I didn’t understand why, but there were just a certain pull towards characters that in my mind had to be together. One of the first couples I felt this way about was Joey Potter and Pacey Witter on Dawson’s Creek. Their romance made my pre-teen heart swell.
I didn’t question it or think much about it until a few years ago when I made the mistake of signing up for Tumblr. A whole new world was opened up to me and I finally understood that fandoms exist and the people join them because they felt the same way I did about things. There’s constant chatter about why characters are perfect together. Joy and disappointment are only two of the long list of emotions that are felt together. It was like finding my place. Fellow people that actually got excited about these forms of entertainment.
A brief breakdown of fandom speak:
- OTP – One true pairing, or the ultimate two people you want together
- Ships – Romantic relationship
- Canon – Official coupling in the narrative
My 5 Biggest OTPs
Joey Potter and Pacey Witter (Dawson’s Creek)
These two gave me so many emotions! The heated debate of Pacey vs. Dawson and who Joey would end up with led to my best friend and I not talking for an entire period in middle school. It was serious business.
Favorite Moment: When Pacey compliments Joey on her bracelet knowing it was her late mother’s leading to a conversation about him paying more attention to her through all the years than she expected.
Katniss and Peeta (The Hunger Games)
I know romance was the last thing about this book that mattered, but somehow through three books I found myself slowly loving the development of Katniss and Peeta’s relationship. It felt real. I’ve got a secret to admit – I’ve read fanfiction and enjoyed it. I wanted more in-depth stories of what happened in life back in District 12 after the books ended.
Favorite Moment: When Peeta ‘comes back’ to Katniss in the moment her life is most tumultuous proving after all the havoc The Capital has done to him, there’s still hope.
Haley and Nathan (One Tree Hill)
I could’ve cared less about the main love triangle of Lucas, Peyton, and Brooke. It was all the same to me episode after episode. There was something about Nathan and Haley.
Favorite Moment: When Nathan and Haley get into an argument about him not supporting her musical career and he shows her all the newspaper articles that ever mentioned Haley that he clipped out and saved.
Mickey and Ian (Shameless)
Here friends is my top pairing from Shameless. I must be a sadist because this ship brings me nothing but pain. Mickey and Ian have had one hell a struggle, but the small moments of joy or even proper caring about each other make me a mess.
Favorite Moment: When Ian confronts Mickey about not being free because they’re in the closet and Mickey tells Ian what they have sets him free. Cue the ugly sobbing.
Luna and Neville (Harry Potter)
WHY WASN’T THIS CANON? I think we need to have some words J.K. Rowling. Neville and Luna were perfect for each other. Thank goodness it got repaired in the movies (a redeeming quality) so I’m just going to pretend they got married and had perfectly weird and adorable babies alright?
Favorite Moment: When we find Luna has been captured by Death Eaters but she managed to send a message to Nevill and let him know she was alright.
These five aren’t inclusive, far from it. Everything from canon to slash I now have the ability to find at least two characters I want paired together in everything I watch and read. There’s even a few real life people I ship and would love to see together, but those seem to be more controversial so I’m staying mute.
I always seem to notice things when putting together my posts, today it was that I seem to gravitate towards the relationship pairings that shouldn’t work, but somehow do. I guess I enjoy the couples that defy the odds.
Are you a mega fan? What are some of your otps?
