I love the buzz of a new up and coming artist. To dive into their few scrappily composed singles scattered online, only to see them grow and hopefully explode onto the scene. This year one of those artists I’ve kept my eye on is Alessia Cara. She first gained my attention by blowing me away with her soulful acoustic cover of Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” during a BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge (SERIOUSLY, watch it!) Since then I’ve kept tabs on her progress. Based on how quickly Cara skyrocketed up the Billboard Emerging Artists Twitter Chart in the last few months, I’d say I’m not the only one taking notice.
While Cara may be young, she’s truly talented with a powerful voice to match. However, I think the quality I enjoy most is her authenticity and eagerness to the whole experience occurring around her currently – which was evident when she was just too excited to release her Four Pink Walls EP, so Cara released it early herself and with homemade videos to accompany each track.
The entire EP has a wonderful old school vibe (reminiscent of Amy Winehouse’s debut.) Every single track has a quality that is uniquely it’s own, yet it all seems to weave together seamlessly. When it came down to it, my favorite single was “Four Pink Walls” – the self-titled track.
“Four Pink Walls” is a song that’s full of soul, pop, and a dash of hip-hop. More clean cut than it’s fellow tracks due to deliberate choice in softer backing music with the focus on Cara’s vocals instead. Listeners are even treated to a small dose of Cara showing off her semi-rapping skills throughout.
I particularly enjoyed “Four Pink Walls” due to it’s message of dreams and achieving them, but the feelings that often follow our pursuits. This ranges from the contemplative nature of every step of the process to looking back and reflecting at where you’ve come from. I’m a big sucker for lyrics I can relate to.
Cara’s full-length album Know It All, is set to be released this fall against some seasoned big hitters (Adele, Justin Bieber, and One Direction to name a few.) I think they have far more to be worried about in terms of competition as Alessia Cara is bound to make a notable splash as a newcomer.
What song are you digging right now? Any new artists you’re keeping an eye on?
P.S. – Another favorite artist on the rise in 2015 has been Motown vibe wheeling Leon Bridges. His music is a feel-good cure for the soul.
Until next time,
