Little Mix has been my go-to girl-group for a while when I want to listen to something that makes me feel empowered. Their two previous albums have been full of sass and good beats, leaving me to play them on full volume. When it came to the upcoming Get Weird, I wasn’t feeling it when I started hearing singles. They were kind of meh to me. That is, until “Grown” was released.
The track is co-written with fellow British pop songstress and debuted in September at Apple Fest to rave reviews. “Grown” was was popular across the board by the girls and fans alike. Due to that they made a smart decision and released an HD version which is most likely soon to be a single.
In the girl-power scale, Little Mix scored another win with a fierce tune. All about a boy who did them wrong – been there, done that, they aren’t concerned with his business anymore.
The peak wheelhouse sonically for Little Mix has always been beat driven anthems. “Grown” falls in that vein as a bouncy, upbeat pop song. From the starting ‘mmms’ to the catchy chorus – there aren’t many moments out of sync with the fast bouncing pace.
My favorite thing about “Grown” is the subtle retro sound. One listen and the Motown inspired vibes are obvious. There’s a heavy saxophone and brass backing. Which shouldn’t come to a surprise for Little Mix fans as the girls have made a signature out of loud brass sounds in their tunes. However, this saxophone break might be the most bumpin’ one to date.
One of the best qualities about Little Mix is how their voices blend harmoniously. “Grown” has plenty of moments where that is displayed, but also let’s each girl showcase their unique talents. All four members have fantastic qualities and abilities with their voices. Some of the notes they reach? You will be wowed.
Little Mix has grown, just like the song. The third studio album Get Weird, drops this Friday, November 6th.
What song is fueling your dance sessions lately?
P.S. – Little Mix and One Direction have a LOT of shared history, so it makes sense that I’d rec “Drag Me Down” as your next tune to listen to.
Until next time,
