What did I say? March 1st and I’d be back. Well, here I am! Hopefully now the busy period at work has come and gone, so I can fully get back to bringing you lovelies the best content for Constantly Seeking Wonder.
There’s a new singer in the game that goes by the name Bishop. Her song “River” is easily one of my favorite finds of 2016 so far. Which you may all be saying okay, it’s March though – that isn’t a feat? But au contraire, these 60 days have already been overflowing with ace releases.
“River” is a blend of the oddest genres one would think to combine. Bishop manages to make a bit of pop, a touch a folk, and a dash of EDM into something that sounds anything but hokey. The genres intertwining create a fierce gentleness that add to the powerful rasp of Bishop’s voice. From the moment “River” starts there is an electronic percussion element that is reminiscent of beat slaps and stomp claps that move the song along. Layer another fingerpicking guitar and you’ve got one heck of a rhythm.
When you mix a softer genre with EDM there are some elements many of us assume would get lost in the process, but the key parts of folk still bubble up to the surface. There is a soulful melody, on point vocals, and a song that is overflowing with harmony.
A defining feature is that even with all the somewhat chaotic noise that “River” brings with it, Bishop’s voice shines through. Bishop’s natural raspy tone is slightly enhanced with a synthesizer (I promise it’s not like T-Pain) to fit the overall vibe of this song. The pure emotion that Bishop is able to pack with her voice makes the song powerful.
I hope there are very big things in Bishop’s future. I for one can’t wait to see how the singer continues to push genre boundaries with her future singles.
What has been your favorite song of 2016 so far?
P.S. – 2016 has been the year of powerful female releases, as another recent fave was Birdy’s latest single “Keeping Your Head Up” which is taking the UK songstress in a whole new direction musically.
Until next time,
