In 2015, I placed Lizzo highly on my list of stars on the rise in music. We’ve known that for a while here in the Twin Cities as Lizzo is a well loved local artist, but in the year since that declaration she’s basically gone and accomplished more than I could’ve ever imagined. Girl has straight out DOMINATED. Not only did she tour with Sleater Kinney during their reunion, she’s been on the bill for every television show and festival across the country it seems. Now, Lizzo has made the jump to major label appearances being a part of the Barbershop: The Next Cut soundtrack.
A little refresher for those who may not know Lizzo. She is a rapper and singer from Minnesota who proves you can have the best of both worlds as she executes both flawlessly. Her music is full of feminism, body positivity, social and political commentary, and hot button topics. It’s powerful, catchy, and unique – it will have you singing along while opening your mind.
Her latest single “Good As Hell” is fresh off Barbershop: The Next Cut‘s album and is the perfect upbeat jam for summer. I feel like we have a massive hit on our hands. Produced by Ricky Reed (who recently also had a hand in Meghan Trainor’s comeback single “No”) “Good As Hell” has a splash of fun retro vibes as well, making it an irresistible pick me up. Basically the musical equivalent of YAAAS.
Lizzo’s most recent LP Big GRRRL Small World dropped this past winter to rave reviews. “Good As Hell” is only skimming the surface of her true ability and giving her full record a further listen is highly recommended.
What song is making your days more enjoyable lately?
P.S. – Look, I know Zayn has boyband roots, but I can assure you this song is a jam.
Until next time,
