Well…you all had to know this was coming right? I mean, that’s as predictable as I get. I’ve been basically counting down to Harry Styles‘ solo music since One Direction went on hiatus almost two years ago. When I actually found out the date was soon approaching, I turned insufferable the last few weeks. I. Was. Just. So. Dang. Excited.
Every step closer to hearing the debut single, I became more intrigued. The promo announcement, the title, the artwork. It was all dramatic AF and definitely not One Direction. Honestly, it was pretty fitting for everything I knew and loved about Harry.
When the title was confirmed to be “Sign of the Times” my immediate thought process was wondering if there would be any homage and connections to Prince and his famously titled song. Rather, it’s vibes from a different icon I felt during the song – David Bowie. It’s full of the atmospheric and airy sounds that Bowie was known for.
The song is about the end of something big but begins with only a somber piano. It slowly adds in cymbals and guitars, reaching its peak when a falsetto choir effect is brought in during the chorus. “Sign of the Times” has everything one would expect from a classic rock ballad, but with a 2017 refresh. Harry also gets to show off his impressive vocals with controlled tone and a wide range.
The Jeff Bhasker produced tune (think Uptown Fun, We Are Young, and Run This Town for a few of his previous hits) is a simple three-chord song that is guaranteed to be just repetitive enough to worm it’s way into your subconcious.
I know many people are like Harry Styles = boyander = no thanks, but seriously put down any of your pre-conceived notions and give it a shot. I’ve grudgingly “converted” many of my self-proclaimed music snob friends into enjoying and embracing the track. If anything, “Sign of the Times” will be a song that straddles the line of both mainstream and more indie persuasions.
My only complaint? It may be slightly on the long side. I personally thought it could’ve had one less chorus. If this is only the debut single, I’m curious to see where Harry goes from here. I know I will be cheering him on.
From the sound of the song and knowing Harry was seen filming while swinging from a rope on a helicopter, the video will surely be interesting.
What are your thoughts on Harry Styles’ big solo debut?
P.S. – One Direction may be on hiatus, but there’s still time for you to fall in love.
Until next time,
