One of my favorite things is when I find a song that just hits you. From the opening note, the song becomes more than a song due to how it seemingly takes residence in your bones. I think that’s part of the reason why I’ve always gravitated towards rock music as nothing accomplishes this feeling more than a well placed thrumming guitar.
The first single “Doing It To Death” by The Kills off their upcoming fifth album did exactly that. The electric guitars slash their first chord and take over your body. When Alison Mosshart’s voice finally seeps across the speakers fitting the tone perfectly, it is just one of those songs that pulsates to the core.
When I woke up to the announcement of Ash & Ice, The Kills newest album, I was ecstatic. Fans had wondered if we’d ever see the duo reunited as Jamie Hince had to re-learn how to play the guitar after multiple hand surgeries and a permanently damaged finger. My next question was what if it isn’t any good? “Doing It To Death” put those qualms to rest. (No, that was not an intended pun but now that I realized it I did laugh.)
“Doing It To Death” is a mixture of pop-rock and slinking blues that comes together in the slickest way. Mosshart’s voice echoes over the production and the thumping bass bringing all pieces together to make this into a perfect lead off single.
Somehow Mosshart and Hince even manage to look the epitome of cool at a trippy funeral. I don’t want to admit exaclty how many times I’ve found myself watching this video. Just know I’m oddly entranced.
I can’t wait to hear “Doing It To Death” live. It will be magical. As will the rest of The Kills catalog obviously.
What songs are you currently loving? Have any of your favorite artists announced new albums recently?
Until next time,
