You found out you’re headed to the GRAMMYs. Elation, joy, disbelief. These are the range of emotions you experience at first. Until, oh shit. What do I wear? How does one dress for the GRAMMYs? You’re going to be surrounded by A-list celebrities at a red carpet, black tie affair. I know for me, I began semi-panicking. Attending the GRAMMYs was my dream and everything had to be perfect. There was one little problem though with me achieving that goal.
I may be fashionable, but I don’t do dressy. I despise fancy dress shopping. Ask my mom or closest friends about any prior situations I’ve had to find black tie attire for. I’m tall (5’10”), curvy, and a bit picky about what I wear. That adds up to a not so great dress shopping combination. Finding things that properly fit me and don’t break the bank AND I enjoy (aka they don’t make me look like a matronly grandma cause I’m not a size two) is usually a long drawn out process.
For the GRAMMYs last year I had less than a few weeks notice to find a dress, on top of huge list of other things I had to accomplish before boarding the plane. In my mind I was guessing I would settle on a subpar dress that would make due. Until I stumbled upon the gem Rent the Runway. I want to make it clear I’m not affiliated or connected to Rent the Runway in anyway – I just really love their services and now have used them multiple times since because they are a stylish lifesaver.
For around $65 dollars I was able to get a designer dress for eight days. Talk about chic. There are many pros to Rent the Runway. They have a wide range of sizes, styles, and levels of formalities for people to rent for a reasonable price. I can’t afford designer at this stage in my life or know if I’d really want to cough up full price even if I could. Through Rent the Runway I can live vicariously in the top designers lines. For each big event you can try something new and keep variety in life. That’s a big yes please for me. The biggest risk is in getting something ill-fitting and having paid for it. This is why receiving the two size choices complimentary is always nice. My best bet to avoid any troubles would be to know generally what cuts and fits work best with your body shape. Rent the Runway also allows you to try out designer jewelry and handbags for a small fee too! I’ve never done that yet, but it’s on my list because it’s all just as pretty as the dresses.
I was able to find my PERFECT dress within a few minutes of browsing Rent the Runway’s website. It matched my eyes, complimented my skin tone, and was the best cut for my figure. Plus sparkles, duh. This dress allowed me to find that nice common ground between the wow factor but not too over the top where I would still be comfortable no matter the weather – I wanted to enjoy this night fully. The high quality of the dress manufacturing was impeccable.
In the Blue Martini Splash Dress by Badgley Mischka I felt like a proper celebrity and was I enjoying that because for at least this one day in my mind I was. Kati Rose hit the red carpet and guess what lovelies! Jewel tones + sparkles were the biggest theme of the night! My dress fit right in amongst the best musicians in the industry. I also got lots of compliments throughout the evening and that will always make a girl swoon 🙂
To balance out the dress I decided to keep everything else simple. All my accessories complimented my dress to bring my look all together. When I went to the stores and asked the sales people if they had “heart of the ocean blue from Titantic” jewelry I was way too excited because yes, I am that person.
I CANT STRESS THE POINT OF COMFY SHOES HARD ENOUGH. I was surprised at how much I walked or was on my feet throughout the day and by the end of the after party I was dead on my feet. I was glad I had opted for wedges knowing they were way more comfortable over some extra fabulous heel. There would’ve been no way I could’ve made it without taking my shoes off and going barefoot otherwise – and that’s not classy.
I’m a failure at hair (thanks for nothing Pinterest board full of tutorials) so I hadn’t planned out what I was doing until the morning of getting ready. In the end I chose severely parted to one side and heavily hair sprayed was the best I could come up with. Somehow it worked and looked simple to match the dress. This was nice because the side devoid of hair showed off my earrings too in an elegant way.
Of course I had to have a bit of a sparkle in my nails.
All together I spent under $200 dollars from head to toe including makeup. I think for an occasion like The GRAMMYs that for many people is once in a lifetime (not me I’m going to get back mark my words) was worth the little bit of a splurge without being excessive.
