The last few years it has seemed like ultra hip sister bands have been taking over the indie rock scene. I am all for it and the wonderful music these ladies are bringing. Let me introduce you to my new favorite find – a trio of sisters from Portland forming the band Joseph. If you could combine the sounds of First Aid Kit with The Staves and add a dash of HAIM you’d have the Closner siblings: Natalie, plus twins Meegan and Allison.
On their second album I’m Alone, No You’re Not, Joseph kept their folk roots, but added an oomph. The single “White Flag” has been getting heavy rotation. I know the first time I heard it was during my morning commute. It’s not very often my radio gets turned up full volume for an unknown song. When it was all over, I waited attentively to learn the artist behind the song I’d just heard because it had resonated with me that strongly.
“White Flag” at it’s core is about following your dreams, facing what scares you, and kicking ass. Basically in that order too. This is a song I can definitely get behind.
The sisters of Joseph find their voices blending together beautifully. There are layers upon layers of harmonies that ebb and flow, while never sounding too delicate for the lyrics or anthemic vibe. When the chorus kicks, “White Flag” remains crisp.
What was the last song where the lyrics felt significant to you?
P.S. – Indie rock seems to be girl power all over. From the sister bands to the solo ladies, I am all for it. If you’re digging the female vibes, I’ve got another awesome artist for you to check out.
Until next time,
